While I was considering ideas for the blog, one of the things I decided I wanted to do was use a monthly writing prompt… moving forward, this shall be known as “Writing Prompt Wednesday”! I’m very excited about this!
What was the best gift you’ve ever received? As I was browsing the internet, trying to decide what to write about for today’s blog, I came across that question, and an immediate answer came to mind.
One year, when I was probably 10 or 11, I got a globe for Christmas. I wanted that globe so badly, asking everyone for one. I didn’t need a globe, and I don’t remember exactly what I wanted it for, but oh man, did I want that globe.
What sticks out in my mind wasn’t the globe itself, or what I did with it when it sat in my room until I went away to college (it might actually still be in my bedroom at my parent’s house, to be honest). No, what sticks out in my mind about this gift was that when I opened it, I was SO excited to have been given this gift that I wanted so badly, that I turned so quickly to give my grandma a thank you hug that I accidentally punched her in the face. You know, exactly the kinda thing you want to do to the person who just gave you the gift that you had been wanting desperately for the last few weeks or so.
It doesn’t matter that I spent the next few years or so spinning that globe, dreaming about all the places I might some day be able to go, or even using the globe to study frantically for Mrs. Vossler’s World History Class. To be honest, depending on how you define “best” the globe might not have even come up. I certainly didn’t use it the most, get the most value from it, or learn a skill from it that would stay with me for a lifetime (you know, like the bike I got for my birthday, or the piano my parent’s gave me from Christmas). No, what makes this gift the best gift ever was the feeling of excitement for receiving the gift that has stayed with me for so many years. My own personal patronus forming memory.
Thanks Grandma.
What is the best gift you’ve ever received? Why was it important to you? Do you still have it? Let me know in the comments below! Also, if you have any suggested writing prompts for WPW please leave those in the comments below as well! Thanks!
Writing prompts are a good way to get the ball rolling, specially when you’re running dry on ideas.
I certainly want to travel the world… so far, I have managed to go to two nearby countries here in Asia. I would want to keep traveling, but, well, I got to save up for those trips…

I agree! I love to travel! I am very lucky to have a job where I get to travel for work, but I try to squeeze in some leisure trips as well, and those do get costly.
